From the back cover
This record marks the first time in the world the Cimbalom has been recorded with this repetoire and instrumentation.  The cimbalom derives from the zither family and from hammer-struck instruments.  Although history tells us that an instrument of this type was used in China and Egypt and was unpopular because of its complexity, it found its way to Greece in about 700 B.C.  In Greece it is called the Santouri.   It flourished in Asia Minor and is now one of the basic regional isntruments in Turkey, Persia, Arabia and Syria.  In these parts of the world, those incredibly talented musicians, the Gypsies, first became devotees of the Cimbalom.  The Gypsies helped the cimbalom to become the Hungarian national instrument.  In England it is called a dulcimer.

Sammy Griggs and The Coronets on Job

Sammy Griggs
and The Coronets
Vocal Charles Carothers

CP-1821 ~ Footsteps
(Sam Griggs, Job Publ. BMI)

CP-1822 ~ Long John Silver
(Sam Griggs, Big Song Publ. BMI)

Job Records #100

1959

All other recordings by this Cleveland vocal group were issued in 1953-1955, starting with "Nadine" released by Chess Records, thanks to Alan Freed.

For a few years (1955 to 1959), they were content to just have gigs around town.  At the request of their managers (Joe Petito and Vic Salupo), they went to Audio Studios to cut a couple of songs that Sam had written: "Footsteps" and "Long John Silver."   However, before anything could happen with it,   Pop singer Steve Lawrence also released a tune called "Footsteps," which became a big hit; that was all it took to squash the last hopes for the Coronets.

By the end of 1960, with nothing happening, the Coronets finally threw in the towel and disbanded, "victims of foul circumstance."

The Gifted Rev. A. Butcher (Sir 104)

The Gifted Rev. A. Butcher Sings Her Own Composition

19663 - Make Up Your Mind
(Little Echo, Bmi)

19664 - Step Aside

Sir 104

The gifted Rev. A. Butcher was in the service of God in the Divine Holiness Church of Cleveland, Ohio.

When Rev. Mother Blue died, Rev. Butcher led an eulogy for the late Reverend. Jet Magazine [August 18, 1977] has the story :

She was more than molded metal, eight cylinders, four tires and a vinyl top. She was « Rev. Mother blue, » a blue luxury Cadillac which served as transportation for Cleveland’s Divine Holiness Church of God.

She was used to take parishioners to and from church, to out-of-town meetings and church services, and to and from doctors appointments.

So when the vintage 1973 car pulled its last mile, the pastorage put her away in style. Rev. Allmon Butcher preached a funeral in the church yard, and telegrams of condolence from out-of-towners who were served by « Mother blue » were read.

Following the service, the car was shipped to Springfield, Ohio, for interment.

Dressed for funeral ceremony, « Rev. Mother Blue , »
was later shipped to Springfield, Ohio, for burial after
going to that great parking lot in the sky.

Carl Maduri

CP-6907 - Miss Teenage Sweet 16

Marilyn Jane Lee

CP-6908 - Happy Birthday Sweet 16 (Invitation)

"B-side is a Spoken word invitation to a party which mentions that Andrea Carroll will be singing her hit "Gee Dad". (Andrea Carroll was a early 60's Teen artist from the Cleveland , OH area. (Epic 9472, oct 61)"

"Miss Teenage Sweet 16" is probably a special adaptation of "Miss Teenage America", a regional hit Carl Maduri had on Cameo in October 1961, some two months before.

Carl Maduri recorded for Reserve (56), Mercury (57), Epic (59), Warwick (60), Cameo (61), Sunburst and Roulette (66)

Carl Maduri has been involved in the music industry for over forty years. He began as a singer/writer, having his first taste of success co-writing the parody hit “The Hula-Hoop Song” with Jim Testa. Carl then began promoting his own music with regional hit songs on Mercury and Epic Records, “The Joker” and “A Girl in Her Teens” (Mercury). Epic saw first-hand, Carl’s promoting abilities, and brought him into their company as a promoter for several popular artists including Platters, Patti Page, The Diamonds and Vic Damone. Carl expanded several years later as an independent promoter for music distributors in the Cleveland market while building his own company CM Production, Inc. Hits included “Happy Feet Time” and “Mr. John” by The Montclairs.

Jackie Peterson & the Paramounts

Jackie Peterson & the Paramounts

Warwick 127/128

15169 - Funny Man
15170 - Because You're Mine

According to Buckeye Beat website,

Jackie Peterson and the Paramounts were a Cleveland band in the greaser groove that released one 45 on the Warwick label. The record seems to have been a local hit, as used copies turn up regularly.

In 1972 Capitol released a 45 by Jackie, with no band accredation, that was recorded in Cleveland. The record is in the 'soft rock' style of the time.
