In 1961 Ray Anderson quit playing with the Osborne Brothers and the following year he became a born again Christian. Ray Anderson formed his own label, GRS (Gospel Recording Service), "a Christian Studio for Christian People".while still a pastor at a church in Richmond Dale, Ohio. The label also had a subsidiary, Victory, which he managed as well until 1969.

Rev. Raymond L. Anderson, age 86, of Camden, OH, died Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at his residence. Born on June 18, 1924 in Richwood, West Virginia he was the son of the late Jesse A. & Bessie Anderson. Ray was a U.S. Army W.W. II Veteran and had been a pastor & bishop for 56 years. Currently he was serving as the pastor of Roosevelt Church of God in Cincinnati, OH for the past 26 years. His radio program, Country Camp Meeting, was on WCNW Radio in Fairfield, OH. He was an Honorable Kentucky Colonel. Preceded in death by his first wife: Maxine Anderson and a Son: Larry Anderson in 2003.

I can't find any information on this label, nor on the artists, nor on the Kallish Enterprises, whose Alllison Records was a subsidiary. (Kallish, name, means 'bee' in hebrew, I've learned during my research)

Both Millian's songs were copyrighted in March of 1974. And the full name of Millian is Robert P. Millian. He also copyrighted, the same month, another song : "The Rest Is Up To You".

A George Montana was a member of Freewheelin' McClure Montana, a name adopted by Frank Reynolds (Secretary of San Francisco’s Hells Angels), Beat poet literature instructor at Oakland’s California College of Arts & Crafts, Michael McClure, and electronic composer and multi-instrumentalist George Montana. Same George?

The ASCAP database doesn't help neither where no Go-Far or R&M publishers can be found.

Also affiliated with ASCAP, a "R&M Music "was the publisher of Lindisfarne and Audience, two english groups issued in the USA on Elektra Records in 1971 and 1972. But it's probably a different company.

The Arkansas Travelers released a second record on the same imprint, also in the Starday custom series, but with a different Illinois address (Seymour) the following year.

Three releases followed in the sixties for Nashville Records, a Starday subsidiary.

One copy is preserved at The Wilson Library in the Daniel W. Patterson and Beverly Bush Patterson Papers (Southern Folklife collection). That's the only reference to The Joyfullairs found online.

Jerry Plemmons, (with two Ms), born in 1938, was at the time director of programming of WMMH, Marshall, NC. WMMH switched in 1964 to full-time country and gospel format, only station in the area with such a policy. An interview of Jerry Plemmons can be found HERE.

Rev. Ed Stines served the West Side Baptist Church (Winston Salem) as pastor from 1988 to 1991. He died in 2001.

Also, in 1956, Ed Stines from Morganton, N.C. (who may be or not the same man) shooted to death his wife's persistent suitor. He was then 19-years old.

First release on a label launched by Dean Frazier who was then working at the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) tower in the Hunstville airport. He co-wrote the two sides of Buddy Hughey's Cherokee single issued in 1959, three years earlier.

According to the BMI database, the songs that Dean Frazier wrote are handled today by Linco Music, a company owned by Ernie Tucker, out of Fayetteville, Tennessee, where Ernie also operated his own label, Linco Records (1959-1963).

The Invictors were a mixed group : 3 white and 2 black members. Following the breakup of the Honeybees, vocalist Barry Boswell met Ray Edwards of the Silhouettes, who was living in Reading from 1944 to 1956. By 1962, the Silhouettes had become loosely organized, and Edwards had been performing on his own. The three white members of the group were brothers Bill and Gene Yuhas, and Bobby Rohrbach on baritone. Bee 1117 was their sole release and featured Gene Yuhas on the A-side, « I’ll Always Care For You. » The flip was written by Ray Edwards’s daughter, and features Edwards on the lead. Also credited for the songwriting is Barbour, Grover Barbour, owner of Bee Records located in Reading, Pennsylvania.

As a teenager, she heard Sarah Vaughan and fell in love with jazz. She taught herself to play jazz piano and learned songs by listening to the radio and scribbling lyrics in shorthand. Playing by ear, she built a repertoire of more than 7,000 pieces.

In 1956, at age 22, she formed the Iris Bell Trio. The only female bandleader in the area, she entertained regularly at the Press Club, Army Navy Club, Owl's Club and Charleston Athletic Club. "We would play anywhere, work anytime, and got some good engagements," she said in a 1977 newspaper story. "Most of the dates were in bootleg clubs, but I was only raided once."

She wrote more than 20 songs, including one that was released on the flip side of a Paul Anka recording. In 1963, she wrote "This Is My West Virginia," the official West Virginia Centennial song adopted by the Legislature as a state song.

In the late 1960s, she took her trio on the road and settled for seven years in Ann Arbor, Mich., where she headlined at the Rubyiat Supper Club.

In 1975, she performed at Mr. Kelly's in Chicago, a coveted booking for jazz musicians. That summer, she appeared at the National Women's Music Festival with Melissa Manchester. In 1977, she returned to Charleston. Battling depression triggered by her mother's death, she limited appearances for many years to the annual West Virginia Jazz Festival at the Science and Culture Center.

She revived her career in the 1990s and played frequently at the Fifth Quarter. In later years, beset with worsening health problems, she remained a virtual recluse. She died in Buckhannon, where she moved recently to be near her youngest daughter.

West Virginia has three State songs (By Richard Ramella) :

“The West Virginia Hills,” with words by Ellen Ruddell King and music and chorus by Henry Everett Engle, was completed in 1885 in Gilmer County.

“West Virginia, My Home Sweet Home” appeared in 1947 and was composed by Col. Julian G. Hearne, Jr., a Wheeling native, attorney, and career military officer.

The third song, “This Is My West Virginia,” was written by Charleston musician and performer Iris Bell in 1962.

Each of these three songs had received an official designation from the State Legislature over the years. “West Virginia, My Home Sweet Home” was declared the first official state song in 1947. In 1961, an edited and approved version of “The West Virginia Hills” was also made an official state song. In 1962, “This Is My West Virginia” was named the official Centennial Song of West Virginia. Understandably, this resulted in considerable confusion.

Albert Earl Bly name is also found on both sides of Film City 1070. (Rod Rogers, 1964) : "Draft Board" b/w "Save A Little Lovin' For Me".

Evidence of Albert Bly's song writing urge is found as early as 1943, year of the copyright of one of his songs "I Picked Some Oranges in California", possibly an autobiographic song, as he was then located in Santa Rosa, California!

Offered on eBay (12 hours left). I've seen it listed in Rockabilly Price Guides with an estimate value between 40 and 60 US dollars. However, I believe that this is an underestimated value... We'll see very soon. (the copy offered is in VG shape).

I've never seen before a label shot of this rare Fernwood Records custom recording. Rockin' Country Style lists the record and gives a Tyler, Texas address, which is certainly wrong.

"I'm A Wise Ole Cat" has been compiled a number of times, including by Stomper Time (Stomper Time STCD7, 1998) Fernwood Rockabillies. Its liner notes has this comment :

Thomas Mitchell also seems to have recorded his marvellous 'I'm a Wise Old cat' sometime in 1960. Immensely popular on the European Club Scene, this track has been 'Bootlegged' on a number of occasions. It's a steaming 'Rocker' in the best Memphis tradition with great instrumental breaks. Issued on Flash records, Thomas Mitchell seems to have been just that--a flash in time, Two Minutes and Fifteen Seconds of Rockabilly Heaven and gone! We do know that Thomas came from Shreveport, Louisiana, played the Hayride & made one tasty 45 for Mercury 'Little Mama/Jukebox help me find my Baby'.

The above information has at least one mistake : Tommy Mitchell on Mercury is a different artist. He was a Tom Fleeger protégé from Texas (or Shreveport?), appearing on various shows in Dallas « Saturday Night Shinding » , "Big D Jamboree" etc.

According to my research, Thomas Mitchell real name is likely Thomas Mitchell May, born on 07/03/1922 and died on 09/01/1999. Thomas May is buried in the cemetery: Mt Zion Cemetery , located in Independence, Ms.

If my assumption is correct he is the same Thomas Mitchell May who operated the Flash label out of Senatobia, Mississippi.

It rarely happens but a Google search brings ZERO result for "Johnny Chaplo", so, yes, this record is obscure.

After the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers disbanded in 1963, Ray and Melvin performed together as The Goins Brothers until Ray’s heart attack in 1994 slowed him down. Ray retired in 1997, while Melvin continued as Melvin Goins & Windy Mountain. Ray would share the stage with his brother on occasion, mostly close to home in eastern Kentucky Melvin Goins and Ray Goins, The Goins Brothers, have been playing mountain string music for 50 years. The music became known as "bluegrass" about the time they started playing professionally. Ray passed away in 2007.

The Piqua Central High School Marching Band was formed by H.O. Ferguson in the Winter of 1916. The marching band participated in April of 1917 at a parade in Troy in uniforms consisting of red sweaters, dark trousers and white caps.

The Piqua High School marching band was directed by Phillip P. Gates in 1917. Gates, Piqua Central High School's long time popular music director noted that PHS probably had the first marching band in the state of Ohio. Gates made that statement in 1973 when he returned to Piqua to direct the PHS Alumni Band at Wertz Stadium....

Also known as Piqua Central High School, it was designed by Harvard and Merriam in the Classical Revival style. In 1995 it was converted to 78 apartments and is now known as Piqua Senior Housing. On August 22, 1996, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Dennis Tenney, who traces his ancestry back to the time of William the Conqueror, was born in Ten Mile, West Virginia, in 1897. As his mother became a widow when he was very young, he became acquainted with responsibility early in life. He started to work at the age of twelve, and a fourteen had his own business. Bad health and lack of money slowed down his schooling, but Mr. Tenney eventually received his master’s degree in social science from Denver University.

Mr. Tenney has been a preacher, salesman, probation officer and real estate broker. Real estate management provided him with financial security and later the leisure to return to his early interest, the writing of poetry.

Brother James Edward Hunt was one of the founding Trustees of the Mount Nebo Pentecostal Church at its current location on Burke Avenue in Alexandria, Virginia. He remained a member for over forty years until his homegoing.

As a young boy, he discovered he had a gift from God as a dynamic gospel singer. He used this gift for many years singing in different churches until he and some friends formed their first successful gospel quartet called the Silver Stars.

In 1960 he and a new group of friends formed the Mighty Spiritual Lights. He became one of the lead singers and manager of the group which made several recordings and received accolades and praise from all over the country. The Mighty Spiritual Lights have shared the spotlight with many of the gospel greats of the world. With his ability to bring thousands of people to Christ through song he established the original “Gospel Hour” at Mount Nebo which became the showplace for many of the major Gospel singing groups in the area. The Gospel Hour is still in existence today.

Black entrepeneur Howard Ransom owned the label in Columbus, Ohio. He later relocated to Los Angeles where he operated the Nanc, Lilly and Lulu labels, with James L.Turner.

Rockin' Country Style gives Pacific Grove, Ca. as location of Spec Records. This information is incorrect, I believe :

The source of the information is indicated as "Billboard news item". Indeed Spec Records was among the list of new records label published by Billboard, but that was in its February 2, 1959 issue. The only known release on the 1959 California Spec label was Staten Johnson " Where No One Has Tears / Joaquin Murieta" (Spec 101).

So the search of the location for this Spec Records is still open...

I've found nothing about Charlie Conrad.

There is some tantalizing references on the web to Walter Hensley playing in 1956 in a rockabilly band called The Black Mountain Boys in the Baltimore area. Same band perhaps?

Le Roy Cortez was born on March 3, 1925, in Ellwood City to the late Frank Cortez and Filomena Keevis Cortez. Leroy served with the U.S. Navy from August 28, 1943 to October 23, 1947 as a Seaman First Class. He served in both the European and American Theatres. Leroy then worked at the U.S. Steel Ellwood City plant until the plant closed in 1975. He also was a school bus driver for Zona Busing Co. for many years.

Mr. Cortez was Catholic by faith. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 252, the American Legion Post No. 157. Leroy was a well known musician in the area. He played the guitar and was the lead singer for his band "Leroy Cortez & The Outlaws".

Le Roy Cortez passed away at his residence on Thursday February 3, 2011 at 4:15 a.m.

I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pa. where I attended school. Upon graduation from high school, I entered the U.S. Army where I was a dental lab techician. My plans were to follow the dental profession by attending Pitt University Dental School in Pittsburgh, Pa. However, as things happened my plans changed. Since the age of 10 I had suffered with migraines headaches. While in the army a friend persuaded me to go to a chiropractor. Since I had tried verything else for relief of the headaches, including shots and neurology tests, I decided I had nothing to lose. Not only did he get rid of my migraine headaches in a short time but also changed my entire life. It was then that I decide to beacme a chiropractor.

Instead of Pitt. University, I attended Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, Missouri. I graduated in 1968. For the last 6 and one half years I have been in active pratice in Monroe, Michigan. In December of 1975, we opened our new office located at 2890 M-52 in Adrian, MI. Since then things have gone well, we have sold the Monroe Office and are now open full time at this office.

Guitarist Beverly Watkins remembers :

Me and some guys got together and we formed a band, and we named it Billy West Stone and the Down Beats. I was like tryin' to play bass, but what I would do, every song we would do I would tune the first bass string down and run the bass line like that. So we kept that group for around about two years, then I met this drummer, Bobby Tuggle. And he carried me and introduced me to Piano Red. And I went out and I talked with Red. Durin' that time he had his radio show there on Madison Place. He used to broadcast from, he had somethin' like a little house in the back of his house, and he'd come on WAOK every evenin', I'd say around about three o'clock. That was around '59. And I was like going into my junior year at Archer High School. Then we formed a band there called Piano Red and the Meter-tones. And we had two guitars, bass, and drums. Curtis Smith on lead, myself on rhythm, Bobby Tuggle was on drums, Piano Red doin' his show separately.

Russell County musician William Jay Hammond was born December 30, 1930. Music was an everyday thing around the Hammond home. After a long day, the family alwaus gathered after supper to sing songs on the front porch. Gospel songs from memory filled the air without the aid of musical instruments. The Hammond family was too poor to own expensive pieces of equipments.

As soon as Jay could afford one, he bought himself a guitar. Without the aid of lessons, he soon taught himself the basics he needed in order to play this instrument.

Jay joined the U.S. Army and served in Korea during the Korean War. Upon return from military service, he was quick to gather with other local musicians and form a bluegrass band in 1955 called Jay Hammond and the DJ’s. The term « DJ’s » became a part of the group’s name because all but one of the member’s first names started with a D or a J. The group included Jay as guitarist and lead singer ; Delmer « Dynamite » Russell, guitar and backup vocals ; Jimmy Wariner, lead guitar ; Davis Wariner, bass ; and Codel Burchett, drummer. From time to time, others filled in and were considered to also be a part of the band. The latter included Roy Wariner and his ten-year old son, Steve, who went to become a leading country music professional.

Although group members were working in Noblesville, Indiana, at the time, their first public performance was a barn dance at the Eli community in Russell County. They drove down from Indiana and were paid five dollars each for their musical performance. Soon thereafter, Jay Hammond and the DJ’s were regular guests at the Lake Cumberland Jamboree at the county fairgrounds. They also won a spot on WBKO TV in Bowling Green on Saturday nights. Steve Wariner was playing drums for the group at the time.

In the early 1960s, Jay married Glenna Neat of Columbia, Adair county. They had five children vetween 1962 and 1972, thus slowing downJay’s music business. He worked through the week but continued to play music on weekends. He also expanded his music career as he began writing his own songs and publishing them. He created Wheelhoss Publishing Company in order to publish his songs. He also paired up with June Campbell Brewster and Roy Wariner to write songs and add music.

Other members who played with Jay’s bluegrass band included Glenna Hammond, Imogene Wooten, and Pat Thompson, who were Russell County residents and who sang backup. Part-time members included the Corbin Twins, Kay and Winston McGowan, Jean Gibson, Joe Thompson, Beckham Collins, June Campbell, Fred Russell, Kenny Wariner, Roy Wariner, and Steve Wariner.

Jay Hammond and the DJ’s were regular performers at White Swan Jamboree, Lake Cumberland Jamboree, WAIN Radio in Coumbia, WBKO Channel 13 in Bowling Green, WJRS Radio in Russell County, and Independance Day Celebration in Jamestown.

Jay Hammond died in March 1983 after two heart attacks.

Note 1 : One of his song, "I'm An Ape", issued on his own Wheelhoss label has been recently compiled on CD (I Am An Ape, White Trash Rockers).

Hal Byrnes became better known as Hal Burns. Happy Hal Burns. A longtime country music performer mostly active in Memphis and Birmingham - very popular regionally.

"He made a couple of Western movies, even before Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. He was always a great one. He was a good yodeler, a good singer, a great promoter and a great personality."

Born in 1908, Happy Hal Burns began his radio career at Birmingham’s WBRC Radio in the 1930s. He later moved to WMC in Memphis, Tenn., where the "Garrett Snuff Variety Show" featured Happy Hal, a cast of musical regulars, top-name guests and a little dog named Sissy.

"It became one of the leading country-music shows of the day. It was carried by major stations in Nashville, Louisville, Cincinnati, New Orleans and Atlanta. Mr. Burns always told a happy thought, a happy story or a joke. His closing remark and signature signoff was always, ’Beeeeeeee happy!’ "

After his service in World War II, Happy Hal returned to his native Birmingham and started another crowd-pleasing musical variety show on WBRC Radio.

"He helped many people succeed in their music careers as a music promoter and variety-show host. Not only did he perform all over the country with his Country Jubilee Shows, he also wrote more than 100 songs. One in particular was ’Cow Town,’ which he co-wrote with Tex Ritter. More recently, it was recorded by country great George Strait."

Happy Hal died in 2000.

One of the two sides of each record ("I've Always Dreamed Of A Dream Girl" and "I Have A Secret") were later re-issued on Perry label, another label also operated by Howard L. Lafer at the same Port Clinton address.

The formation of the new record company was announced by The Toledo Blade on July 15, 1959 :

Howard L. Lafer, of Port Clinton, has just formed [...] Vacation Land Records. Toledo performers are heard on both of them. On one platter Ralph Clifford [...] and on the other, Rose Trick vocalizes « The Sailor, », a rock and roll number for which her mother, Vera Trick, write the words, and Cal feminine singer, Nancy Houghton, does « I Have A Secret ».

Note : The Marblehead peninsula of Ohio was a major vacation and recreation area, dotted with summer cottages and resort hotels. Hence the name of the label, Vacation Land.

Carroll (Cal) Warmington died in Tucson, Arizona in 1978. He was 70. A trumpet player, he led the Cal Warmington Revelers band in the Toledo area from 1950 to 1965. He also, in the same time, worked in the naval procurement department of the U.S. Department of Defense for 20 years, retiring in 1968.

This is certainly Eliot Richard Streeper from Santa Fe, New Mexico. But the various sources I've found on the Net doesn't mention his musical past.

Eliot Streeper was born January 18, 1946 to Dr. Richard B. Streeper and Katherine W. Streeper. He died unexpectedly of a heart attack September 24, 2005. He was 59. Eliot was born in San Antonio, Texas, and as with many war-time children, Eliot moved often with his family. They settled in Santa Fe in 1959. Eliot loved Santa Fe's architecture, landscape, history and curio shops and traded in coins … [obit, The Santa Fe New Mexican, October 14, 2005 ]

Members included Henry L. Taylor (1923-2010) , Milton H. Taylor and Johnny Cox.

At 13, Johnny Cox cut his first record with the Barons. It was called “Jaywalk”, a song he wrote and played on his saxophone. He was recruited by a band called the “Sparkletones”. The group had a hit called “Black Slacks” and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. Johnny toured with them in Canada, playing sax, at the age of 14. Upon his return home, his 6-year old sister kissed his hand over and over because it was the hand that shook the hands of Ricky Nelson, Fabian, and Paul Anka!!!

Later he was a member of The Jays, The Swingin’ Medallions, Sassy, Rhythm Brothers, Griff & Johnny, The Out-of-Towners Band, and many more.

Singer-songwriter Helen Misel (born 1923) learned to play the guitar when she was four, and has been writing her own songs for more than 45 years.

When she was growing up in Cowgill, Mo., everyone in her family played music -- all nine kids, and her father played fiddle. Her older brother William taught her the guitar sitting on his knee.

By 16 Misel said she was playing professionally, in veteran's hospitals and in political rallies.

She was 35 when wrote her first song, for her mother, who had lost her 19-year-old son -- Misel's brother -- in the battle of Iwo Jima. The song was called "She's Some Gold Star Mother, And He's Some Mother's Son."

Misel said the song that "everybody says is my best song ever" is one called "Hello, God."

She wrote it after visiting the museum of Christian artist and Precious Moments creator Sam Butcher.

In the mid-1960s she played at DJ conventions in Nashville, three years in a row. One of those years Misel visited the Grand Old Opry, where she met offstage several famous musicians, including Gene Autry, Tex Ritter and Johnny Cash.

"He was stone drunk," Misel recalls of Cash. "They were all good people."

Misel moved to Nettleton Manor in 2001, to be near her daughter, Diane Berning. She still plays music, on her electronic keyboard and guitar.

Misel's love for music is evident in her apartment, where large black musical notes decorate the wall above her keyboard.

She's not only playing music still -- in church and at the retirement residence -- Misel still writes music. Just last Sunday she performed a new one at Bonner Springs United Methodist Church, called "He's My Friend."

One of her songs "Lonely Street Light" was recorded by Barbara Foster on the song-poem label Preview (#2473).

Nash-Beau Music was formed by Bill Hall and Jack Clement who had worked together in the business since 1959. They owned also the Big Bopper, Dixieanna and Tracie companies, and in 1962 formed the Hall-Clement Publishing.

William G. (Bill) Hall (1929-1983) achieved success as a music producer, promoter and publisher. Born in Brookhaven, Bell County, Texas (which is now located on the Fort Hood Army Reservation) in 1929, Hall moved to Beaumont with his family as a child and graduated from South Park High School and Lamar State College of Technology. He began his music career in Beaumont, opening a recording studio and working as a booking agent for such artists as George Jones and Benny Barnes, eventually becoming Jones' manager. Hall also had hits with J.P. Richardson's "Chantilly Lace" in 1958 and Johnny Preston's "Running Bear" in 1960. Later, he joined with Sun Records engineer Jack Clement, to form the Gulf Coast Recording Company,

Phyllis Schlomovitz was born on Jan. 9, 1917 in Rockford, Ill. to actors Kate Holland and Goldwin Patton, she was the principal harpist with the Milwaukee Symphony for 15 years. In May 1952, she wed Dr. Benjamin Schlomovitz. Widowed in 1969, she moved to Palo Alto where she pursued a solo concert career and branched into the entertainment style of harp, playing at restaurateur John Rickey's famous Dinah's Shack for 20 years...

1. the coincidences between the lives and deaths of Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy

2. a premonition in a dream by "Reverend Charles Morgan in Rhode Island" of the sinking of the Titanic, and

3. driver "Harry Cooper" keeps passing a hitchhiker who grows older each time and scares Cooper into plunging his car over a guard rail to "his firey death."

Originally from Sharon, Pennsylvania, Cardille was long a fixture on the former WIIC Channel 11, the NBC affiliate in Pittsburgh, and was the first voice heard when the station went on the air on September 1, 1957.

Cardille is probably best known as Chilly Billy, the host of Chiller Theatre, a late night Saturday program that showed horror and science fiction films. It is this program for which Cardille is best remembered, earning him his famed nickname. The program aired from 1963 until its cancellation in 1983. Joe Flaherty, a Pittsburgh native, acknowledges this show as an influence in the formation of the popular "Monster Chiller Horror Theatre" sketches on SCTV.

Louis Purtle born September 13, 1954 has been playing bluegrass since 1970. Before playing with The Second Edition, he played with the bluegrass Buddies. Louis sings tenor and lead and plays bass on this album.

Jimmy Haley who was born January 19, 1965, won World Champion Guitar at Union Grove in 1969 while playing with the bluegrass Buddies. On this album he plays lead guitar and sings tenor, baritone and lead.

Jim Smith born February 12 ; 1952, changed from playing rock music to bluegrass in early 1971. On this album he plays rhythm guitar and sings lead and bass.

Jeff Hooker who was born June 15, 1955, has been playing the mandolin for 7 years. He currently olds the 1972 World Champion Mandolin title at Union Grove. Prior to his playing with the Second Edition, he played with the Bluegrass Buddies. Jeff sings baritone.

Hersie McMillan who was born January 30, 1953, has been playing the banjo for 4 years. He has played with the Easter Brothers and the Green Valley Quartet. Also he has won several talent shows.

Born March 7, 1930 in Ohio, Jimmie Williams found himself entertaining fans in the Hio, Indiana and Kentucky area. He started his musical career over radio station WZIP in Covington, Kentucky.

Later, he was appearing both as a disc jockey and entertainer over WMOH in Hamilton, Ohio. He did two shows a day with the station while there. One, was "The Jimmie Wiliams Show" and the other was the "RFD Ramble", playing listener requests and spinning the hit records of the day.

By 1957, he was working with WNOP in Newport, Kentucky.

At the age of 18, encouraged by his friends, Fred Horrell entered a talent contest at Onie Wheeler's Ozark Corrall. He won first place singing Roy Orbison's "Ooby Dooby". From there he joined Mert Mirly and the Rhythm Steppers as lead vocalist. (Fred is featured on their 1960 Spinning Records release "My First Broken Heart" / "Hey Little Lola")

In 1960, Fred left the Rhythm Steppers and formed his own band "The Flames". Fred and the band were in demand and began to travel out of the midwest. In 1961, the Bill Black's Combo hired him to tour with them. After his return, back with the Flames again, they traveled to Memphis, Tennessee to record "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" at Bill Black’s studio. The record was engineered by Larry Rogers.

Robert G. Kiko, 53, a custodian at Lorin Andrews junior high school, wanted to write lyrics for he had been thinking of doing records. Two of his records recently were sent to disc jockeys across the country. Another is being waxed.

His friends encouraged him to publish some of his poetry. Kiko has written a lot of poetry. Along with fishing and traveling, poetry has been a way to relax for him. He began writing poetry while in the Air Force in 1941 and he hasn’t stopped. Back in Massillon after the war, Kiko wrote poetry and used to leave it on desks of teachers.

Miss Edna Dix, an English teacher at Lorin Andrews, encouraged Kiko to do something with his poetry, he said. After talking it over with his wife, Anne, he wrote away to four or five record companies.

His first record, « Star Bright, » is a song about our times.

« I don’t expect to be a rich man over it, » Kiko said about his newly realized dream.

Charlie was a popular performer in the 1960s and ’70, with his band The Dixie Partners, and as a duo partner with Bill Napier. He recorded prolifically in both formulations, with favorable comparisons offered at the time between his rich, baritone voice and that of Carter Stanley.

Sadly, Charlie faced the same issues with alcohol that took Carter at such an early age. Moore also died young in 1979, at the age of 44, and didn’t live to participate in the more recent growth of bluegrass music.

Travers Chandler is at work on a biography of Charlie Moore, likely the first to be compiled for this influential bluegrass artist.

Elder James E. Lenox was born July 4, 1931.

Elder Lenox was always involved in the religious arena with his father. At the age of eight, he began singing. He was one of the original members of the Thompson Community Singers, working closely with the late Chester Robinson and the Westside organization. His first recording was in 1966, including the well known classic: “I’m One of Them Today”. Fame followed numerous appearances on the Jubilee Showcase hosted by Sid Ordower featuring the Chicago Pentecostal Chorus which was founded by Elder Lenox.

He was one of the leading singers in the Church of God in Christ under the late Bishop L.H. Ford, as well as a National Evangelist. His name is synonymous with his original recording of the hit record “God Has Been Good to Me, I Won’t Complain”.

He died in 2001. From the Chicago Tribune obituary :

Rev. James E. Lenox, 70, pastor at Greater Holy Temple Church of God and Christ and a renowned gospel singer, died of heart failure Monday, Aug. 6, in Thorek Hospital and Medical Center, Chicago. Rev. Lenox, a lifelong resident of Chicago's West Side, sang gospel for more than 60 years, said his wife, Aldrea. He was also an Army veteran. Rev. Lenox worked for Western Electric Corp. and later as owner of a grocery store to support his singing career, which took him around the world, his wife said. He arranged "I Won't Complain," now a gospel standard, his wife said, and formed the Lenox Family Singers. Rev. Lenox was also a board member for the Chicago Gospel Festival. By 1979, he was out of the grocery business and had become assistant pastor to his father, Bishop Eleazar Lenox, at Greater Holy Temple, taking over as pastor in the mid-1980s. "He traveled a lot, because he was in demand, because he was a great Bible teacher," Aldrea Lenox said.

Shirley Jester died in 2003.

From her obituary :

Raised in a musical family - her father played in Arnold's Jazz Band downtown - she was playing the piano by the time she was 5. She had the ability to play anything by ear - almost instantly.

While in high school at Our Lady of Angels in North College Hill, she began working part time as a staff pianist for WKRC-TV, going full time after her 1951 graduation.

There, she played music for locally produced television shows. She also met George Palmer, who was then working at the station as a news anchor. The two were married in September 1962.

At 25 she started playing in nightclubs, starting at the Coal Hole*, a popular club located in the now-defunct Sinton Hotel.

"Shirley did her homework. She made the Coal Hole a legitimate room," said Leo Underhill, former jazz disc jockey for WNOP.

Over the next 40 years, Ms. Jester performed solo and with jazz groups all over Cincinnati and nationally. She had gigs at The Top of the Crown, in the former Clarion Hotel; the Iron Horse Inn in Glendale and at Kenwood Country Club.

*Coal Hole : Named for the space it occupied where coal had been stored in the old Sinton Hotel before it was converted to another source of heat.

Jelly Bean Acres was one of WKRC-TV’s early-morning shows for young viewers. Mari Kay (left), Shirley Jester and Roy Starley read stories, sang, and talked with puppets.

Carmen Murphy established her House of Beauty parlour around 1948 and developed it into a well-respected and profitable establishment. In the late 50s she ventured into the music business when DJ-cum-singer Jack Surrell persuaded her to fund gospel recordings. She had a piano placed in the salon's basement, converting it into a practice room, and consequently became an unlikely pioneer of Detroit R 'n' B.

The first secular HOB label release was made around 1959 by one of Detroit's premier vocal groups, The Peppermints, whose members included Lee Rogers, Jesse Greer and Duke Browner.

Born Laura Lee Newton, 9 March 1945, Chicago, Illinois)

Lee was born in Chicago, but as a child relocated to Detroit with her mother. After a few years, she was adopted by Rev. E. Allan Rundless, who had previously been a member of the Soul Stirrers, and his wife Ernestine, who led a gospel group, The Meditation Singers. Featuring Della Reese, they were the first Detroit gospel group to perform with instrumental backing. The group recorded on the Specialty label in the mid 1950s, appeared on the LP Della Reese Presents The Meditation Singers in 1958, and in the early 1960s recorded for Checker Records.

As Laura Lee Rundless, she replaced Reese in The Meditation Singers in 1956, and over the next few years toured widely around the country. In 1965, as Laura Lee, she launched her secular solo career as an R&B singer in clubs in Detroit, although she also continued to record occasionally with The Meditation Singers. She first recorded solo for Ed Wingate's Ric-Tic Records in 1966, with "To Win Your Heart".

Hometown for Don Peachey is Burnett, WI (just a nice little town waiting to be discovered) located about an hour from downtown Milwaukee and an hour from downtown Madison.

The Don Peachey Band played their first public dance in June of 1951 and released their first recordings in 1957. Lead singer Selma Kirkendall was born July 17, 1932 in Carruthersville, Missouri. Her family moved to Gary and she attended Roosevelt High School, graduating in 1950. She was a member of a female group, The Echoes of Eden, who recorded for Vee-Jay Records.

After her stint with the Echoes of Eden, Selma Kirkendall worked with another gospel group, the Belton Kirk Singers. In the 1970s and 1980s, she managed and sang with the Sounds of Soul. She also had a radio show on WWCA, where she was known as "The Gospel Lady."

Selma Kirkendall died in the late 1980s or early 1990s.

The Sounds of Soul were previously on the CLB label in 1970.

Again, the Rite pressing is a second pressing.

The leader of the Ghosters was Don Jobe. The other Ghosters were Lance Nelson, Mike Lewis, Guy Berley, and Virg Callendar.

Don Jobe :

The name actually came from a club we formed in high school. The term "Ghoster" was an expression used by soldiers in the Viet Nam War. Soldiers who didn't want to work hid when the sergeants came around for work details. These guys were referred to as "Ghosters" because, like ghosts, they disappeared.

60s: What were the circumstances leading to The Ghosters recording?

DJ : Fortunately, the right people happened to hear us at a performance and offered us a one record contract. Our record was recorded for T & R Records in Chicago. It sold pretty well, but we didn't realize much money for ourselves. That's when we decided to incorporate and licensed our own label, Ghost Records. Our first five records were recorded at RCA Studios in Chicago.

60s: Who were these "right people"?

DJ: The "right people" wanted to be anonymous then, and I assume they still do. They were not directly in the music business, but had good contacts. They wanted to make an investment in us after hearing us at a performance hosted by a WLS Chicago disc jockey. They paid for our studio time at RCA studios in Chicago, and their connections hooked us up with T&R.

Pod Records was from Memphis or from Little Rock (where Richard Narrell has been seen recently as the pianist of The Little Rock Bop Club Band )...

Bob Cloud previously had two labels in Flint, Michigan : Deal (The Dealers, 1958) and Colt 45 (1959). He also owned Mayflower Publishing.

Jerry Tuttle played organ, piano, steel guitar or saxophone on many Nashville sessions, on records by Joe Tex ,Charlie Rich, Roy Orbison,Jerry Lee Lewis,Tony Joe White. He was also a songwriter and producer : Monumental Funk (Grand Funk Railroad). He was in the seventies in studio bands recording hits of the day by the score on Spar Records (The New Generation) and probably many others.

Dave Cox died Saturday (September 3, 2011) after a massive heart attack.

Dave Cox, an African-American backed by the white rock-n-roll combo the Sharptones. Dave Cox goes back to the early days of Cleveland rock and continued into the 60s, maintaining a big draw in the area nightclubs. The group recorded three 45s on Golden Leaf, Dollee, and Whirl. The Sharptones personnel changed regularly and included many veterans of the Cleveland scene. Cox continued to perform into the 1990s with backing band the New Sharptones.

The group’s founder, Tom Downs, was youth director for the Catholic churches in the area and a graduate student at Notre Dame. He left for Davenport, Iowa, one year after the formation of We Together.

Now living near Orlando, Fla., Downs, 73, who formed similar groups in three other cities, credited the assistance of Don and Rosemary Clifford, who still live in South Bend, in the creation of We Together.

Toni Dunlap, of South Bend, was a sophomore at Adams High School in 1978 when she joined the group.
She said the group’s size ranged from 50 to 80 members, ages 14 to 20.
“We sang at churches, nursing homes, parades, ethnic festivals, Camp Millhouse and even the Stepan Center (at the University of Notre Dame),” she said.

Stepan Center is Notre Dame's most versatile multi-purpose facility. The 21,000 square foot venue is located on the northeast corner of campus, north of Flanner and Grace Halls on Stepan Drive.

Built in 1962, the facility was constructed as one of the first geodesic domed facilities in the nation -- to date, it remains one of the most unique structures in the world.

While you will not find very many geodesic domed facilities these days, you will also rarely find a facility with such flexibility as hosting events like: major concerts, ethnic festivals, sporting events, sports club winter training, service club recreation area, ROTC training, and Mass. The Del Rios, one of Memphis, TN's pioneering vocal groups, started in the '50s. Different guys came in and out, but one constant was William Bell. They performed on shows with Phineas Newborn, a Memphis jazz legend, and found regular employment in clubs. The initial Del Rios single dropped in 1956 on Meteor Records, a small label in Memphis; the single "Alone on a Rainy Night" b/w "Lizzie" increased the group's popularity locally but that's about it.

William Bell : "We would do two gigs on the weekend. We would play for the college kids at the Plantation Inn in West Memphis, right across the Mississippi river in Arkansas.owned by Betty Berger and her husband, which was like a high energy dance club, and then we had a later set at the Flamingo Room. Betty Berger was during that time a night club owner. She and her husband owned the Plantation Inn in West Memphis We recorded that single for her.”

Owner of Bet..T Records Bettye Berger was born in 1930.

In 1955, Bettye started to work on WHER, the worlds first all womens radio station created by Sam Phillips :

Crammed into an 18-by-35-ft. studio in a Holiday Inn in Memphis, WHER was the nation's first "all-girl" radio station—not that you couldn't tell from the decor. There were plush pastel carpets, walls painted aqua and pink and doors marked with colorful names like DOLL'S DEN and GIRL FRIDAY. "It was like walking into Disney World—and the girls were beautiful and sweet," recalls Berger more than 40 years later.

Through her connections with Sam, she meet the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. She only went on a few dates with the king. She wrote a ballad called 'Please Convince Me That You Love Me' that Elvis wanted to record at and speed it up in to a Rock n Roll style song and she refused. She laughs now by saying what a fool she was for not allowing Elvis to record it. (The song was recorded by Buddy Cunningham and issued on Phillips Int'l 3516 in November 1957.)

In 1959, she is credited (as Bettye Maddox) as the co-writer of several songs released on the West Coast American International label : "Campus Raid" (The Nighthoppers), "Headless Ghost" (the Nightmares) and "We Love The Dodgers" (Jimmie Maddin).

When she was 35, she joined a booking agency for musical artists. She was the only female agent the company had ever had. When a man did not pay her $1800 dollars for a booking, because she was a female and he thought that a woman shouldn't have that much money, she quit the firm that she was working with and created her own.

Her first client was Charlie Rich. Soon after word of her success spread, more and more artists became aware of the new, small, agency. Willie Mitchell, a trumpet player and an influential producer also joined her roster. At one point, her agency had outdone the national agency that she had previously worked for.

A entire chapter (by Laura Helper-Ferris) of "Tennessee Women: Their Lives and Times", a book edited by Sarah Wilkerson Freeman and Beverly Bond, is devoted to Bettye Berger.

Another release on the same label. The address (201 S.Cleveland, Memphis) was also the address of Bettye's Continental Artists Inc., her booking agency.

Len Kunstadt was born and raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn. After serving in the U.S. Air Force in World War II, Lenny graduated from New York University and began his prolific study of jazz and blues music.

"Picture Album Blues" was also released on Var-Bee Records, a Pittsburgh label owned by Glenn Campbell who also operated United Recording Service here.

The Var-Bee version (same version?) was compiled on Slow Boogie Rockin', Vol. 6 (Collector CLCD4499 in 2006).

On "Glenn Campbell presents Pittsburgh Country" (Varbee 7002, various artists LP), Jimmy Contenta had three tracks : "Drinking Champagne", "Kawliga" and "My One & Only Love."

Born May 7, 1929, in Freedom, a son of the late John and Mary Prichinello Contenta, he was a retired steelworker from Armco, Ambridge, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a corporal during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, Conway. He loved and raced pigeons and belonged to the Beaver Valley Pigeon Club. He was a member of the Baden American Legion and the New Brighton SOI. He loved music and had a country music band, Jimmy Contenta and the Weepers, who had played locally. An avid bingo player and an outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting.

But that didn't stop him from having an active ministry that reached people in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Virginia, West Virginia and Michigan.

''He preached sinners to repent. Everyone loved him. He was a good father and a good husband,'' said his wife of 63 years, Audrey M. Hensley. ''He was loved by everyone and had lots of friends in different states.''

Rev. Hensley, 79, of Taylor Mill, died Monday at his home. He was an evangelist and member of the Community Pentecostal Church in Independence. A son, Robert Hensley, died in 1995.

During the middle 1960s Raymond Fairchild first attempted to take his music to the public. By this time he had moved from Cherokee to Maggie Valley, North Carolina and had found a receptive audience at "The Hillbilly Campground," located in Maggie. He recorded many albums (most notably on Rural Rhythm), the first was in the early sixties on Sims Records (also available on Kash Records).

Recommended reading is the Wayne Erbsen's article published in March 1982 by "Bluegrass Unlimited" available HERE.

Excerpt :

Completely at home deep in the forest, Raymond the mountain man, knows his way around. In the fall of the year he still goes hunting ginseng, which has a root that is highly valued for its legendary curing properties. Although some ginseng hunters in the mountains take their sack of "sang" to nearby Asheville, North Carolina or Knoxville, Tennessee to sell for over $200 a pound, Raymond keeps all that he digs. Drawing upon lore learned from his mother's people, he combines the ginseng along with eighteen other roots and herbs to produce a medicine which he takes daily as a tonic. Going far into the woods in search of ginseng and other roots, Raymond has been known to stay gone for nearly a month. After one such trip he told of killing more than one dozen deadly rattlesnakes. Besides bringing home a poke full of wild roots, he often returns from the mountains with a fat ground hog in his sack. Claiming that groundhog is the finest wild meat in the world, Raymond also renders the grease from the woodchuck to make a tonic for the croup. "Just a spoonful or two," he cautions.

Jackson Taylor was born in Portage, Wis. on November 26, 1942, the son of Thomas and Margaret (Tucker) Taylor. He graduated from Green Lake High School and attended U.W. Madison. Jack was a member of BMI as a song writer, and was the Doggie Sox Manufacturer in Green Lake. Collecting classic cars was a passion for Jack, and he won numerous trophies for his cars. He also was the coordinator of the Green Lake Car show for 20 years.

He passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at the University Hospital in Madison.

He did invent, patented and manufactured the Doggie Sox :

One of the more interesting new creations in the kennel collection is Doggie Sox. But it’s not a joke. « Salt on the sidewalks is like acid. It cracks dogs’ feet, » says inventor Jackson Taylor. « There’s been foot protection for dogs before. We’ve bought rubber foots for our poodle and had to throw them away. They don’t stay on the dog. We’eve got a suspender system that keeps these socks on. »

Back on topic. It's rather unusual to see the names of renowned musicians printed on the label of a Rite pressing : Cliff Parman, arranger and producer of this disk, started in Chicago in the forties and later in Nashville. He co-wrote "Pretend", a Nat King Cole hit in 1953. He arranged recordings by such artists as Esther Philips, Joe Henderson, Cal Smith, Bobby Helms, ... to name a few.

Frederick Music, the publishing company, was owned by Bud Brandon, with whom Cliff Parman worked in Chicago.

"There are only a handful of documented releases on the Brosh label (pronounced "Broash", we're told). At least a few of them, as documented on the AS/PMA website, were clearly not song-poem releases, while others clearly were. This one, which likely was the first release on the label, would appear to fall into the latter category...
